Nearly 12 years ago, I moved to Pochun from the Bay Area. All I had was a love for insects, reptiles and nature. I didn't really speak Korean and I was bullied a lot-family was difficult too.
Luckily, the principal of the school (추산초) I was at - Mr. Hong Sam Sun - built a garden for his students. This became my playground. I met most of my friends through a shared passion for nature, and today, I am ever so grateful for the collective effort of those who contributed in creating a haven for students to play and learn.
As I look back later in life, I wonder how many more students were impacted by Mr. Hong's mission. I heard recently that my old school got shut down. It's unfortunate, but Mr. Hong's legacy lives on through his pupils. Thank you for everything.
